While the UK is filled with university cities where accommodation is cheap, many students spend hundreds on just one week of rent.

Student consultancy Student.com has released data on the most expensive cities in the world for student accommodation, asking users of the site how much they paid per week in rent between 2015 and 2016.

While typically expensive big-name cities feature on the ranking, there are also some unexpected results, with smaller cities also making the list.

Here are the world's 10 most expensive cities to live as a student:

Note: The average prices for rent listed below refer to a mixture of single and double rooms.

10. Sydney is Australia's most expensive city for accommodation, with students paying an average of £201 ($268) per week on a room.

9. Oxford is one of the world's best universities, so it's no surprise that students are paying a premium for their accommodation. The average student in Oxford shells out £227 ($303) per week.

8. Cambridge is slightly more expensive than Oxford, with student accommodation costing an average of £235 ($313) per week.

7. The Scottish capital is one of the priciest places to rent in the world, with students paying £237 ($316) per week to live there.

6. London is the UK's most expensive city to live if you're at university. Students at London's 23 major universities spend an average of £247.50 ($330) per week on rent.

5. Boston is home to world-class institutions like Harvard University, but student housing in the city doesn't come cheap, coming in at £288.80 ($385) per week.

4. The La Jolla district of San Diego, California, may be beautiful, but students at the University of California who live in the area pay £325 ($434) for the privilege of doing so.

3. The University of California Berkeley was ranked as the sixth best university in the world by the Times Higher Education rankings in 2016. So it's hardly surprising that Berkeley is the third most expensive place to rent a room as a student, with accommodation costing an average of £344 ($459) per week.

2. San Francisco is the priciest place for students to live in California. They spend around £346.50 ($462) per week on rent.

1. New York City is famous for its high rent prices, which explains why it is the most expensive city in the world for students, who shell out an average of £394.50 ($526) per week on rent — almost twice the amount that Sydney's students pay.
