WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama retains a big lead over possible Republican rivals in the 2012 election despite anxiety about the economy and the country's future, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Wednesday...

With Congress battling over a Republican budget plan that includes scaling back the federal Medicare health program for the elderly, the poll found a plurality of Americans, 43 percent, oppose the Medicare cuts and 37 percent support them.

The poll that is most important comes in November 2012, until then, polls are basically meaningless. Unless you are a liberal, then your entire world is governed by polls.

*rolling my eyes* As opposed to conservatives, who couldn't care less what the people need or want, particularly if it means the wealthy can't get another tax cut.

Democratic Party Affiliation Advantage Increases in May

The Democratic Party's advantage in party affiliation increased slightly to six points in May, with 45% of Americans identifying as Democratic or identifying as independent but saying they lean Democratic, compared with 39% identifying as or leaning Republican. The Democratic advantage was four points in April.

    DL,
    From the article you cited:

A Washington Post-ABC News poll earlier this week gave Romney a slight lead over Obama among registered voters.

From the same poll you cited:

Obama's approval rating inched up 1 percentage point from May to 50 percent

The poll found 60 percent of respondents said the country is on the wrong track, up from 56 percent in May but still below April's high of 69 percent.

Did you consider all the numbers from the poll before you parroted the article word for word in your post?
50% approval rating isn't anything to jump up and down about and it shows that President Obama is vulnerable.
Over 50% of people saying the country is on the wrong track doesn't bode well either.

Please note that over 10% of the respondents to the Reuters/Ipsos poll are not registered voters.

DL, how do you account for the results of the Washington Post-ABC News poll?
The poll where all the people polled were registered voters and Romney had a slight lead?

None of this points to a "big lead" for President Obama.

Tenguy is right that the only poll that matters comes in on the night of the first Tuesday of November 2012.

    The poll also said.

I suspect the gap in approval ratings will close when the republican candidate is selected.

Oddly the poll also suggests that the average poll is 8' 4" high.

what will the polls show next.

That probably explains why Romney won't get the Republican nomination. :)

    During May 23 - 29, 2011 May Barack Obama's approval rating was 49 percent. During June 10 - 13, 1983 Ronald Reagan's approval rating was 43 percent.

We know what happened in November 1984. The same thing can happen for Obama in 2012. There is no obvious reason why it can't. Currently the unemployment rate is 9.1 percent. In June 1983 the unemployment rate was 10.1 percent.

    A clever point.
I don't think the Republicans are going to play "It is the turn of the most senior Republican" when it comes to nomination, which is pretty much the only shot that Romney has. Romney might have a shot at capturing some of the Independent vote, but I don't think he will get the support of the Evangelicals within the Republican party.

They mean that in a stagnant economy President Obama is holding his own. If things get even marginally better in 2012 the President and his party should do fairly well.

I think most of the voters agree with me that no matter how bad things get, they would be worse for most Americans if the Republicans dominated the country. When the GOP dominates the rich get richer. No matter what else happens, that does. In a stagnant economy the rich cannot get richer without most of the country getting poorer. That is what did happen when George W. Bush was president. In 2012 most voters will remember what the Bush years were like.

If the Democrats really believe that fairy tale is true, and count on that to win, then they will get fucked hard in November 2012.

    1) Reagan had vision and the people who worked for him were organized. The Obama white house is in disarray.

    2) Reagan was a Republican. Obama is a democrat.

    3) Reagan is held in high esteem. Obama is a punch line.

I've already bought the boxes that I'll send Obama on November 3, 2012. I want him out of there long before January 20 2014.

The same Ronald Reagan who raised taxes when he was Governor of California and signed a bill into law that gave amnesty to illegal aliens in 1986?

    Yeah, I remember him.

Good luck finding a Republican candidate who can appeal to the Tea Party, the Evangelical Christians, moderates, and Independents.

Better hang on to those receipts :excited:

CNN Poll: 75% of Americans Approve of Obama Personally Read more on Newsmax.com: CNN

    Wednesday, 08 Jun 2011 02:59 PM

President Barack Obama retains strong personal appeal even as his overall job approval rating has weakened.

An overwhelming number of Americans — 75 percent — say they give President Obama a thumbs up regarding approval of him as a person, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released on Wednesday.

CNN notes that “Obama's strength remains his personal appeal” and adds that a “plurality of Republicans” also like him personally, though their positive views of the president are apparently trumped by economic jitters...

In the new survey, only 48 percent of respondents say they approve of how Obama is handling his job, down 6 points from late May, while 48 percent say they disapprove, up 3 points from late last month.

Considering economic worries, including unemployment, gasoline prices, and the federal deficit, Obama’s poll numbers appear strong compared to previous presidents during bad times.

I can understand why so many Americans like the President. His squeaky clean family resembles "The Huxtables." The mess Sarah Palin calls a family is more like "Payton Place."
